In this post I want to talk about the source of a majority of my secondhand clothing. I’ve been buying my clothes here since we moved from Brazil in my teenage years when I also started getting more into shopping. It is one of Zurich’s most well-known flea markets due to its amazing location in the city center and its great reputation among not only locals but also tourists.
If you live in Zurich and you have never been to the Bürkliplatz flea market, you have to go. Even if you aren’t from here but just visiting the city for a few days I highly encourage you to check it out. To explain to you what the hype is all about, I’ve listed some reasons why I personally find this the best flea market in Zurich.
1. The sellers
I think what makes this flea market particularly good is the fact that the majority of the sellers are really young. This makes a huge difference when looking through the stands. Young people not only tend to have pieces from brands you may like and wear yourself, they are usually also able to consult you better than older people could. Oftentimes, when I try on something, younger sellers tend to understand what I’m going for while older ones don’t really know how to give me any advice. It is nice to find clothes that match your style and personality and to be able to relate to the seller through their clothing.
2. The brands
What I quite enjoy about this flea market is the fact that it offers loads of brands I know and like. Zara, Nike, Adidas and many other mainstream brands are just some I see every time I go there. Don’t get me wrong, some of the best pieces I’ve gotten thrifted and my favorite finds to this day are true vintage pieces. But even though I really enjoy the individuality of vintage clothing, sometimes branded clothes are a more practical alternative. Due to the fact that, as previously mentioned, the sellers tend to be rather young and modern in a way, the clothing offered is usually quite mainstream, including brands such as Brandy Melville and H&M. But the brands also range all the way to more high-end, luxurious brands, which are not exactly what I’m personally into but surely a good alternative to the new, store-bought luxury items that cost a fortune. It obviously depends on the effort, time and money you are willing to invest, but with the wide variety that this flea market offers, I’m sure there’s something for everyone.

3. The location
This flea market is located in the heart of Zurich, at Bürkliplatz, thus its name. Surrounded by Zurich’s main attractions and overlooking the lake and the Alps in the back, it is definitely worth a visit, even if you are not the biggest fan of flea markets. It is easily accessible via public transportation and can be perfectly combined with other programs/activities in Zurich due to its central location. I highly advise you to thus leave your car at home, since the parking is very expensive in the city center and all the main visiting points are nearby.
